Australian Domestic Airline Policies

Australian’s are keen to travel interstate, but with the current uncertainties regarding border closures and COVID19, it is helpful to be aware of each airline’s cancellation policy. Here is an overview of the flight cancellation and refund policies of the major domestic airlines as of November 17th, 2020*.

Whether it’s a family visit, or a summer getaway, book your upcoming holiday with peace of mind knowing exactly where you stand, and compare companies to find a policy that you’re comfortable with. Many airline companies have introduced flexible booking policies to allow travellers peace of mind when planning their next trip.

Qantas Policy

For domestic flights on or before March 31st 2021, Qantas offer additional flexibility, should you choose to change your plans. Request a flight credit before your date of departure to retain the full value of your ticket as a flight credit. Use the credit to fly before 31st of December 2021. You can use the value of your credit over multiple flights if the full value is not used initially. For flights after the 31st of March, 2021 flight changes and cancellations are also available, however standard fees and charges will apply.

Qantas also offer a special ‘Fly Flexible’ policy where any domestic flight booked between 21 May 2020 and the 31 January 2021, for travel between 12 June 2020 and 31 January 2021 can be changed to another date at no additional cost aside from any fare increase that may apply.

For domestic flights that are cancelled for reasons within the control of Qantas, they will book you on the next additional flight at no additional cost, or you can choose to receive a flight credit or refund instead.

Virgin Policy

In light of the recent takeover Virgin policies are yet to be confirmed. Virgin are currently waiving change fees on domestic and international bookings for travel between 15 March 2020 and 31 January.
