Geelong, VIC

Geelong is a popular city destination south west of Melbourne, where urban meets coastal, and the Great Ocean Road begins. Geelong is surrounded by coastal towns, and there are so many vibrant communities to explore, sprawled along this beautiful region. In the heart of town, The Geelong Waterfront is the perfect place to chillout, dine, swim, and spot the 1872, steam driven carousel. Explore and array of cultural attractions like the botanic gardens, museums and wineries, and take a splash in the abundant surf and sand.

What to see and do:


Drive the Great Ocean Road

Arguably Australia’s most scenic road trip, this journey begins in Torquay. Discover dramatic cliffs, seaside towns, and the famous 12 Apostles. Along the way, explore the Otways National Park, Bells Beach, and the scenic Bay of Islands.

Visit Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre

Learn about the culture of the indigenous people and their connection to the land. Here you’ll meet Australian animals, learn about the aboriginal way of life, and hear the stories of the dream times from the descendants of those who passed them down over generations.

Cycle the Bellarine Rail Trail

Grab a bike and cycle 32 KM’s of cycling paths from Geelong, past Barwon Heads, and arriving at Queenscliff. Along the way you can stop at parks and cafes to replenish your energy.

Geelong Waterfront

Stroll along the foreshore and enjoy the atmosphere. Choose from an array of dining options, swimming and often events.

Torquay

Drive west to this seaside town famous for its surf beaches. Embrace the local surf culture that birthed some of Australia’s biggest surf brands. Splash in the waves and take in the scenery.

Lorne

A little further west from Torquay is Lorne. This town has a thriving arts community and a Mediterranean atmosphere. It is also the gateway to the incredible Otway national park, which offers endless possibilities for exploration and some incredible rocky mountain vistas and waterfalls. Explore the town’s cafes and fresh seafood and of course surf culture is also a big part of this region as well.

The Botanic Gardens

Established in 1852, these are the 4th oldest botanic gardens in Australia, and as such they offer a well established variety of plants and a relaxing place to stroll.

 

 

 

How to get there:


Drive just over an hour southwest from Melbourne, or fly directly into Avalon Airport, Just 20 Minutes from the city centre. You can also catch a  train to Geelong from Southern Cross Station in Melbourne.

Best time to go:


Summer, from December to February is the best time to enjoy the coastline without the chilly bite of the ocean wind.
