Water Based Activities

With 10 kilometres squared of lagoons, 20 beaches and 18 surf locations and a marine park, there is plenty of fun to be had in the waters surrounding Lord Howe Island.

Lord Howe Island Marine Park

The tropical waters that surround the island are abundant with marine life with over 450 species of fish and 90 species of coral. The prefect place to snorkell with the turtles and colourful fish as the water clarity is excellent, or take a glass bottom boat or diving tour with informative guides.  A favourite with visitors is hand-feeding the fish at Ned’s Beach Special Purpose Zone, which is protected area.

Try your hand at kayaking in the tranquil lagoon waters, or surfing the shallow coral reefs – Lord Howe picks up powerful groundswell from the Southern and Pacific oceans throughout the year.

Hiking

The Island is famous for its magnificent hikes, with 45 km of hiking tracks including Valley of the Shadows, Malabar Hill and the more challenging Mt Gower (where you’ll need a guide).  You’ll encounter many of the island’s unique wildlife and groves of Banyan trees and Kentia palms.

Fishing

For the keen fisherman, Lord Howe Island has some amazing fishing locations and tours offering plenty of opportunity to catch garfish, wahoo, kingfish, marlin and yellowfin tuna. Be sure to check regulations before embarking on your journey as there are sanctuary zones in the marine park and limits on certain species.

Golf

One of the most picturesque golf courses can be found on Lord Howe Island. The 18-hole Lord Howe Island Golf Club will be sure to impress, with the shadows of the imposing Mt. Lidgbird and Mt. Gower the course roams through the Kentia Palms out into the gently rolling open fairways along the ocean foreshore with many challenges along the way.

Ocean Swim Week

A biannual event held in February and November each year. Circumnavigate the island with former World and Australian Ironman Champion, Trevor Hendy. Swimming up to two kilometres each day around Lord Howe Island’s spectacular coastline among vibrant coral, pristine beaches and under 200 vertical metre cliffs.

Pinetrees Lodge offers morning Yoga by the Lord Howe Island lagoon and has a fantastic Day Spa on site too!

Lord Howe Island is located on the east coast of Australia off the coast of Port Macquarie in NSW. Qantas Link offer daily flights from Sydney with weekend flights available from Brisbane. The island can also be reached via and Port Macquarie with Eastern Air service also available.

The most popular time to visit Lord Howe Island is between September to May in the summer months. However, the island is just as spectacular during the Australian winter season, showcasing bright blue skies and sunny days.

As the island is heritage listed, only 400 people are allowed on the island at one time so you will never be inundated with crowds on this unspoilt, diverse island.
